The RMV Learner's Permit Test is 25 multiple-choice questions. You need 18 correct (72%) to pass — meaning you can get 7 wrong and still succeed. The questions are drawn randomly from a pool, so you will not see the same test twice.

Here's something most practice test sites don't tell you: Massachusetts lets you take the knowledge test online at home — but only after visiting a full-service RMV branch in person to verify your documents. Once your documents are processed, you'll receive access to take the test remotely. Not every RMV location offers this — you must visit a full-service branch, not a limited-service location or AAA.

RMV Vision Test

Massachusetts tests your vision at the start of your RMV permit appointment. The test checks that you meet minimum visual acuity standards for safe driving. If you wear corrective lenses, they are required for the test — your uncorrected vision is not what the RMV is assessing. How the Massachusetts Permit Test Actually Works

Once approved, you'll receive access to take the 25-question knowledge test online at home at your own computer. You do not take the test at the RMV office. This matters for your preparation. Taking a test at home removes some of the pressure of a time-limited office setting, but it also means no one is watching the clock for you. Practice until you consistently score above 80% — well above the 72% passing threshold — so you have a comfortable buffer. One more thing: only full-service RMV branches can process new permit applications. Limited-service branches and AAA offices cannot. What to Bring to the RMV

Permit Hold Period and Driving Restrictions
